My top suggestions:
Be safe and don’t do anything silly!
What inspired you to become a member and what were your early experiences like?
My father taught me how to use a pistol, and he was given a special license to carry one. He was a taxi owner who often used to service judges and magistrates as he had the government contract. I got started when I couldn’t play tennis anymore after a neck injury in 1988. After 4 years where I just watched the tennis games, a friend (Trevor Patrick) from Northern Districts Pistol introduced me to shooting and I started with Castle Hill, when it was based at Nirimba.
What is/was your favourite caliber and shooting event?
Oh, it would have been service competitions using a .38 special at Auburn. We don’t do that anymore.
What would you say has been your biggest role or contribution to the club?
Serving on the committee, when we were at Nirimba and running the matches at Auburn.
How has the club evolved?
When we got thrown off Nirimba, we moved to Castle Hill, and from there we started shooting at Auburn.
Are there any traditions or values you hope future members will preserve?
There’s been a change in the competitions at Auburn. It’s more shooting from the bays and not as fun. We used to shoot bowling pins.
Who were some of the most memorable characters for you?
Dave Miller.
Any fun stories?
Seeing snakes, rabbits, and a fox at Nirimba.
What advice would you give to new members just starting out?
Be safe.
